A Day in the Life of a VLA Student

Families often ask what a typical day looks like at Valley Leadership Academy. While no two days are exactly the same, each day follows a rhythm designed to support leadership development, academic focus, and meaningful connection.

Morning Meeting: The Heart of the Day

Every VLA day begins with Morning Meeting, one of the most important parts of our school culture. Morning Meeting is where students intentionally develop leadership and personal growth skills that carry into every aspect of learning.

During Morning Meeting, students explore topics such as:

Growth mindset vs. fixed mindset

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People & 16 Habits of Mind

Communication, responsibility, and self-awareness

Leadership through service and example

Morning Meeting may look different from day to day. At times, the entire school gathers together for a guest speaker or special presentation. Other days, students meet within their grade group led by a Learning Coach—or are guided by one of our student leaders. This flexibility allows leadership to be both taught and practiced.

Learning Blocks & Independent Study

Following Morning Meeting, students transition into their academic day.

VLA operates on a block schedule:

  • 4 morning blocks

  • 2 afternoon blocks

  • Each block is 40 minutes

Students may attend classes during these blocks or participate in Independent Study.

If a student is not scheduled for a class during a particular block, they work in their designated study area on core academic work. Every study area is staffed with a Learning Coach who is available to guide students, answer questions, and support focus and organization.

This structure allows students to build independence while still receiving consistent support.
